But if you're thinking remorse-drama, conscience masque, or even semi-trashy who'll-break-first? page-turner, forget it: This is a straight gee-whiz, first-to-have-ever-noticed college novel-"Hampden College, as a body, was always strangely prone to hysteria. The narrator, a blank-slate Californian named Richard Pepen chronicles the coverup. But the death isn't ruled a murder-and might never have been if one of the gang-a cadging sybarite named Bunny Corcoran-hadn't shown signs of cracking under the secret's weight. During the only one that actually comes off, a local farmer happens upon them-and they kill him. A bunch of ever-so-mandarin college kids in a small Vermont school are the eager epigones of an aloof classics professor, and in their exclusivity and snobbishness and eagerness to please their teacher, they are moved to try to enact Dionysian frenzies in the woods. The Brat Pack meets The Bacchae in this precious, way-too-long, and utterly unsuspenseful town-and-gown murder tale. Not worth replacing your old paperback, but a nice collector’s item for Palahniuk’s cult. The book is really a superfluous artifact, but that doesn’t change the fact that Palahniuk remains one of the most gifted writers in American fiction. Throw in some more drag queens, a knife-wielding ex-cop, plenty of drugs, sexual abuse and even a wedding, not to mention some eerie family values. While recovering in the hospital, Shannon meets Brandy Alexander, a voluptuous pre-surgical transsexual who adopts Shannon and takes her on the road, granting them new monikers, identities and trades in the process. The narrator is Shannon McFarland, a fashion model whose beauty has been obliterated in an enigmatic accident. The book that Kirkus drubbed “Too clever by half” in 1999 is still here in its ghoulish entirety. In matter of substance, there’s not much of a “remix” to be had here, just a, “Now, please jump to Chapter Forty,” Choose-Your-Own-Adventure style that doesn’t so much reorder the book as augment the disjointed, whiplash atmosphere its author intended. The elder statesman of transgressive fiction even sounds a bit cynical-“You young people, you who think you invented fun and drugs and good times, fuck you.”-though with his skewed sense of humor, it’s generally hard to be sure. In a new "Reintroduction," Palahniuk explains that Invisible Monsters was never meant to be a conventional narrative, resembling in its original incarnation the Sears catalogue or an old copy of Vogue magazine, jumping forward and backward in time with the quick-cut style changes of a classic MTV playlist. Palahniuk ( Damned, 2011, etc.) plays literary DJ, revisiting and updating his 1999 novel Invisible Monsters.

Next time I get a chance to work on the dozer I will be attempting to thaw out the fuel pump, and hopefully I’ll rectify this problem. Parts for this old dozer are hard to come by, and a new fuel pump is upwards of $900. That, and I’m really hoping that it’s just ice. There has been ice in just about every component that I have disassembled so far, so I have no reason not to think that. I suspect that there is ice in the pump from moisture in the old fuel. For one reason or another, the fuel pump is not delivering enough pressure for the engine to fire. So therein lies my problem with the fuel system. If the pump is working as it should, fuel should spray everywhere due to the pressure. However, with the fuel line (that goes to the injectors) off the pump, I tried to crank the engine. I cracked open the bleeder on the fuel pump and found that it’s nicely full of fuel. Unfortunately, this little dozer is still having fuel system problems. With them open, cranking the engine draws fuel up and purges the air in the system. I had tried turning it over with the fuel injectors cracked after replacing the fuel filters I’m supposed to bleed the air out of the system by cracking the injectors. Unfortunately, I still was unable to get it to fire. There’s also the option to “chat” by sending a voice note or emoji, which we found handy when checking in with our teenage tester. With GPS tracking, you’ll always know where your child is, using the Moochies app, meanwhile the voice and video calling lets you contact your child, or vice versa. You will, however, have to activate the sim and choose from the two sim packages (£10 or £15 per month). Although, unlike its direct competitors, Moochies connect arrives with a built-in sim card, meaning you won’t have the extra task of sourcing one. You’ll need to follow the setup steps and download the app to bind your phone with your child’s watch, but we have to say this was pretty simple, with a video taking you through the process. It’s interesting that it’s branded as a “phone watch” rather than a smartwatch, although, essentially, it’s a basic wearable phone for kids, offering a safe way to stay in communication with our children, and we’re here for it. The first Moochies phone watch launched in 2016 in Australia, and last year reached UK turf. The Vivofit jr.3 delivers on all fronts and feels like a polished product, just as you would expect from Garmin. This saves kids having to charge it, and we were also delighted to learn that the fitness tracker is swim-friendly, so there’s really no need to take it off. Unlike other watches, the battery isn’t rechargeable, instead it’s powered by a CR2025 battery, which lasts for a year. This feature was a bit advanced for our reception-aged child, but our six-year-old started to grasp the reward system. Kids will also be rewarded for being active, 60 minutes of daily activity unlocks ‘adventure’ – an educational but fun travel story, where the kids can play the addictive tap-challenge game and quizzes. By completing chores, kids will earn virtual coins (parents decide how many) and parents can choose how the kids can redeem them – there are many preset options such as “go swimming” or “eat out”. We like that you can personalise the chores too. You can also set alarms, amend daily step goals and see how active your child has been, thanks to the movement sensor, and set goals such as feeding the dog. In the app, you can customise the watch’s face, choose an avatar, select a step icon, and state a bedtime and wake time (to provide accurate sleep data). Setup was a doddle, simply download the free Garmin Jnr app, and set up a profile (or profiles, if you have more than one device). They both commented on how comfy the silicone strap was, and loved the embossed leopard print and peach colourway. On first look, we were impressed by how slight it is in comparison with all of the other watches we tested both our four-year-old and six-year-old tried it on for size and it laid flat on their wrists like a watch should. Garmin is one of the main contenders in the smartwatch field, so expectations were high when testing out its latest junior edition: the Vivofit jr.3. By wearing a watch, they can reach their step goals, with more advanced options tracking heart rate, too. Many of our children already partake in some form of sport, with more than 90 per cent of children between five and 16 years old consistently being involved with it. Often coined a “phone watch”, these are appealing if you’re not quite ready to purchase a mobile for your child, but want to safely stay in touch with them.Ī smartwatch goes way beyond simply telling the time, although a bid to encourage timekeeping in our offspring shouldn’t be overlooked, many parents will also opt for a wearable tech gadget to encourage and track movement. Like a simplified version of a mobile phone, if you’re looking for a product that can offer those features, parents should bear in mind it’s likely you’ll need to source a sim card, which may incur extra monthly costs. The more premium smartwatches that provide GPS tracking and communication options can offer great reassurance for parents. Some go further and become much like a mobile phone, with GPS tracking, calls and some even enable you to do video calls. Many of these kids smartwatches offer similar benefits to those for adults – activity tracking, goal setting and heart-rate monitoring. Like it or loathe it, if you’re a smartwatch wearer yourself, you’ve probably noticed an instant attraction from children, whether that’s fascination with the lights or asking about your step count.īut smartwatches are no longer strictly for adults, with a whole host of interactive watches designed with juniors in mind. A child’s first watch is a milestone, but like most childhood accessories, technology now plays a part. Be together with friends and family wherever you are. The internet/Facebook/TV give us so many amazing stories. Here are 10 things that give funerals both a deep and broad sense of meaning and value: Funerals can be both deeply spiritual events and celebrations mixed with music, poetry and beauty. They’re neither “just for the living” nor must they be the traditional viewing, priest, eulogy and funeral director format (although none of these things are bad … especially the funeral director *wink* *wink*). Just burn my ass and throw me in the woods.”īut funerals are both much deeper, much more important and much broader than most of us assume. Many people tell me “I don’t want a funeral. We can all agree that this particular disease, this particular addiction is worthy of our most harsh, most striking, most caustic curse words we can find.© 2013 Justin Dolske, Flickr | CC-BY-SA | via Wylio There’s no shame here towards the addict. I understand that shame is never the path to healing. I’m tired of children asking, “what happened to mommy?” and “when will she wake up?” at funerals. I’m tired of hearing the empty cries of “My, baby, my baby! How did this happen?” How did we get here?” when the mother sees her son in a casket. I’m tired of unstitching and embalming autopsied bodies that are discolored and broken down by addiction. I haven’t seen him in five years so I don’t have any expectations.”įUCK HEROIN. “Yes, you can,” I say, “but this doesn’t look like the man you expect to see.” The son replies, “That’s fine. “Can I just see my dad one more time?” the young man asks. How do I respond when that very same young husband follows it up with, “how do I explain this to my kids?”Īnd then there are the times when the body has been left somewhere, abandoned by so called friends, and it’s starting to decompose. What do I say to the young husband who tells me, “We don’t have any money for a funeral, she blew our savings and her life on this relapse.” That she was excelling in college, holding a steady relationship with her boyfriend, working part-time and now she’s on our morgue table. Or the parents who tell me with blank expressions that they had absolutely no idea their daughter was using. I haven’t slept in years, but last night I actually slept because I knew he wasn’t out hurting himself or someone else.” How about the parents who tell me, “I’m glad it’s over. Or, what do I say to the 30-year-old wife with three kids and no income, little support and now she has no husband.įuck it. Or, what do I say to the sixteen-year-old son who wants me to call him as soon as I get his mom to the funeral home because “that will be the first time in my life that I’ll know exactly where she’s at”. This was supposed to be the beginning of her life, not the horrible end. I don’t say it because it’s impolite and I’m supposed to be the even minded professional to your grief clouded bereavement.īut, “I’m sorry for your loss” and “my deepest condolences” just don’t work when a 19-year-old daughter was found in the basement of her friend’s house after two stints in rehab and five months clean. That’s what I want to say when I get a phone call from a crying son, daughter, husband, wife, girlfriend, or boyfriend telling me their loved one has died from an overdose. Photograph Author URL: Title: Fuck Heroin In 1979-80, four F-111C were modified to reconnaissance configuration (RF-111C). Though the first aircraft was delivered in 1968, there were development delays and structural problems. The variant F-111C was developed with improved wings and landing gear for export to Australia. The US Navy, however, did not accept the F-111B due to its performance and weight issues. The F-111B could carry six AIM-54 Phoenix missiles and an AN/AWG-9 Pulse-Doppler radar. The design allowed the carrier to equip elevator decks, and also improve the on-station endurance time. The nose of F-111B was 2.59m shorter than the first variant and featured 1.07m longer wingtips. "Two F-111 variants, F-111A and F-111B were initially developed for the USAF and US Navy respectively." General Dynamics collaborated with Northrop Grumman for designing the fuselage, landing gear and assembly and test of the aircraft. The F-111 variants include a terrain-following radar system. The F-111 is powered by two Pratt & Whitney TF30 afterburning turbofan engines. The fuselage is made of honeycomb sandwich and stiffened panels, making it a semi-monocoque structure. The wing span in full forward and full sweep varies from 16° to 72.5°. The aircraft is capable of attacking in all-weather conditions and delivering ordnance through low-level penetration of enemy defences. It has an internal weapons bay and a cockpit with side-by-side seating in escape crew capsule. The F-111’s design features variable geometry wings and is mostly built with aluminium, titanium steel. The F-111 was given the name Aardvark due to its long and slightly overturned nose. The General Dynamics proposal had similar structural components for both the USAF and US Navy aircraft versions, while Boeing designs lacked this commonality. The General Dynamics designs were selected against the competitors, including Lockheed Martin and Boeing followed, by the TFX contract in December 1962. In 1961 a request for proposals (RFP) was called to develop the aircraft based on the TFX specifically designed for USAF. "The internal bay could carry Mk 117 type (340kg) bombs and up to Mk 118 (1,400kg) was cleared." Both the USAF and US Navy aircraft versions were similar in design and could carry large warloads at high speeds. They were developed with two-seat and twin-engine features. The aircraft with large long-range designs were based on swing-wing platform. The programme was to develop, consolidate and meet the needs of a supersonic strike aircraft/ tactical fighter-bomber for the USAF and a long range interceptor for the US Navy. The F-111 was developed as part of the Tactical Fighter Experimental (TFX) programme during early 1960s. Tactical Fighter Experimental (TFX) programme In 2007, the Australian Government decided to replace the F-111 aircraft of RAAF with 24 F/A-18F Super Hornets. They will, however, be retired from service in December 2010. RAAF has been the sole operator of the F-111 with 21 aircraft. It was earlier delayed due to problems such as structural integrity and political issues. The aircraft first entered into the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) service in 1973. The Australian F-111 variant was delivered in 1968. Joachim's birth house in Kittsee today Memorial plaque on his birth house London Philharmonic debut, Beethoven Violin Concerto In his début performance in the Gewandhaus Joachim played the Otello Fantasy by Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst. In 1843 Joachim became a protégé of Mendelssohn, who arranged for him to study theory and composition with Moritz Hauptmann and violin with Ferdinand David. In the journal Neue Zeitschrift für Musik Robert Schumann was highly enthusiastic about Felix Mendelssohn, on which Moser writes "Only in Haydn's admiration for Mozart does the history of music know a parallel case of such ungrudging veneration of one great artist for his equal." in 1835, Mendelssohn had become director of the Leipzig Gewandhaus orchestra. In 1843 he was taken by his cousin, Fanny Figdor, who later married "a Leipzig merchant" named Wittgenstein, to live and study in Leipzig. finally – and most significantly – with Joseph Böhm, who introduced him to the world of chamber music). (Serwaczyński later moved back to Lublin, Poland, where he taught Wieniawski.) In 1839, Joachim continued his studies at the Vienna Conservatory (briefly with Miska Hauser and Georg Hellmesberger, Sr. Joachim's first public performance was 17 March 1839 when he was of age 7. Although Joachim's parents were "not particularly well off", they had been well advised to choose not just an "ordinary" violin teacher. There from 1836 (age 5) he studied violin with the Polish violinist Stanisław Serwaczyński, the concertmaster of the opera in Pest, said to be the best violinist in Pest. In 1833 his family moved to Pest, which in 1873 was united with Buda and Óbuda to form Budapest. He was a first cousin of Fanny Wittgenstein, née Figdor, the mother of Karl Wittgenstein and the grandmother of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein and the pianist Paul Wittgenstein. He spent his childhood as a member of the Köpcsény Kehilla (Jewish community), one of Hungary's prominent Siebengemeinden ('Seven Communities') under the protectorate of the Esterházy family. He was the seventh of eight children born to Julius, a wool merchant, and Fanny Joachim, who were of Hungarian-Jewish origin. Joachim was born in Köpcsény, Moson County, Kingdom of Hungary (present-day Kittsee in Burgenland, Austria). Life Origins Joachim's birth house in Kittsee He formed a string quartet, and kept performing chamber music on tours. Joachim quit service in Hanover in 1865, and the family moved to Berlin, where he was entrusted with founding and directing a new department at the Royal Conservatory, for performing music. He married Amalie, an opera singer, in 1863, who gave up her career the couple had six children. In 1879, he premiered Brahms' violin concerto with Brahms as conductor. In 1853, he was invited by Robert Schumann to the Lower Rhine Music Festival, where he met Clara Schumann and Brahms, with whom he performed for years to come. From 1852, Joachim served at the court of Hanover, playing principal violin in the opera and conducting concerts, with months of free time in summer for concert tours. After years of teaching at the Leipzig Conservatory and playing as principal violinist of the Gewandhausorchester, he moved to Weimar in 1848, where Franz Liszt established cultural life. He returned to London many times throughout life. He made his debut in London in 1844, playing Ludwig van Beethoven's Violin Concerto, with Felix Mendelssohn conducting. Joachim studied violin early, beginning in Buda at age five, then in Vienna and Leipzig. A close collaborator of Johannes Brahms, he is widely regarded as one of the most significant violinists of the 19th century.
